Christ Church Hall Roof

As many of you will know, last summer one of the Hall roof beams cracked and partially slumped.  This was quickly corrected, but there was concern about the state of the rest of the roof and so a programme of careful scrutiny of every part of the roof timbers was put in place.

This was a long and expensive job, as the required scaffolding could only be placed above walls that ran under the Hall which could support the considerable weight of the scaffolding.

A massive gantry-like structure had to be put in place; a section of the Hall examined; and then the whole structure dismantled and re-erected at the next point.

The good news is that this examination has finally been completed, and the scaffolding is being dismantled, so Oxford Experience will be dining in the Hall as usual this year.

The Hall staff have had to work under less than ideal conditions during this work, but you can be assured that they will be their usual smiling selves this summer.

To quote Andy Hedges, the Hall Manager “The scaffolding is coming down as we speak and the whole place will be ready for you on Sunday - it's been a bit of a struggle to be honest but we are there now.”

Summer Courses in Archaeology

The Oxford Experience Summer School

Courses in Archaeology

The Oxford Experience Summer School is held at Christ Church, Oxford

The Oxford Experience Summer School offers a number of one-week courses in archaeology as part of its programme.

Participants live in Christ Church - the largest of the Oxford Colleges - and take their meals in the Great Hall, which is the hall that inspired the Hogwarts Hall in the Harry Potter films.

Courses are limited to a maximum of twelve participants and tend to fill up rather quickly, so early application is advised.

1066 and all that

The traditional location for the Battle of Hastings - the site of Battle Abbey - has been called into question.

New research by the Time Team shows that the Battle of Hastings was not fought on the site where it was believed to have taken place. In recent years other theories have been put forward to suggest where the battle took place, but work by the Time Team has shown good arguments for a new location.

Trevor Rowley will discuss the new information in his Oxford Experience course 'William the Conqueror', which runs from  and incorporate it into the field trip to the battle site. This which will mean that Trevor's students will be amongst the first visitors to the new location.

Landscape Archeaology: Forty Years on

Landscape Archeaology: Forty Years on
Lecturer: Trevor Rowley
6pm Friday 6 December 2013
To be held at the Rewley House Lecture Theatre, 1 Wellington Square, Oxford, OX1 2JA

The OUDCE is sponsoring an annual lecture on landscape archaeology in memory of Mick Aston, who sadly died earlier this year. Mick was tutor in local studies in the Department for Continuing Education before moving to Bristol University as Staff Tutor in Archaeology. Earlier he had made a major contribution to the archaeology of Oxfordshire through his work on the Sites and Monuments Record, then based at the City and Count Museum, Woodstock.

In this lecture Trevor will discuss the thinking behind Landscape Archaeology, a book which went on to have a significant impact on the development of field archaeology in Britain.
